The Meaning of Life
This is a big switch for me. I usually do silly or somewhat amusing posts (it's subjective I suppose). I'm not even sure why I'm writing about this. I took a seminar in the summer of 2001 with a group called Landmark Education. They are, according to some, a cult of sorts. I will say I agree. The group came out of EST and claim to offer ways to get more out of life and understand the meaning, etc. Dana and I were having some problems and in my efforts to bridge the gap that was growing, I thought that trying to find some meaning to my life might help. She is one who questions that issue with her own life (which I think is great) but I rarely/never gave it a thought. So I found myself in the World Trade Center going every week to the semiar (at $500) I put about 1/2 of my effort into it which was my choice. I guess I should have played at 100% but that was then, now I'm doing therapy and I'm 100% invested in it but that's another post (or not) I don't even remember all of the things that were required of me but it did involve looking at different aspects of your life and building on making them better. Sounds like a plan, right? A big thing they were selling was that you will find out what the meaning of life was. As always, there were some out there who dove right in and really seemed to get a lot out of the seminar. I think some of these people are lifers who go from cult to cult searching for answers to the meaning or purpose in life. On a side note, this group was lead by a guy who looked like Gene Hackman. After a few weeks of the seminar, they dropped the bomb as to the meaning of life.
Pretty profound huh? My first reaction was like...okaaaaayyyyy. I mean, I guess it could very well be that. Who knows what the meaning of life really is? I didn't get a handbook when I was born. There are all sorts of groups, people, religions that tell us what the meaning of life is, but since when do they haveall of the answers? Did they get the handbook? I don't know myself what the meaning of life is or what my purpose is if any. I do try to live my life in a way that does no harm to others, I try to leave things a little better than I find them and I try to be part of the solution, not part of the problem (as I see it).
On a side note, I was supposed to go to the World Trade Center on Sept 12th, 2001. I didn't make it that day. The group met a month or two later at another site. One thing that was discussed was the events of 9/11. They asked "what happened on 9/11?" Their reply was "that 2 planes flew into the Twin Towers and people died"
"The meaning to life is that life is empty and meaningless and it's meanless that life is empty and meaningless"

Wow..I went to your links and took a quick look around. Seems like pretty vague information.
I would think you're better off with your therapist, too.
I like your PHILosophy of living...not harming others, leave things better, be part of the solution :)
A spiritual connection has always helped me. God, not any religious organization. I definately think each person has to find their own way..not just be a follower.
BTW, I enjoy your serious side just as much as your amusing one!

Phil,
I'm reading Zen Speaks right now and find it pretty interesting and funny.
I'm sure it has given me a new way to think about the "meaning of life"

I don't agree that life is empty and meaningless. It's as full as you make it.

As a complete nihilist I think that life is empty and meaningless; at least, I think that if there is a meaning it is so large that us little carbon-based psychotic monkeys do not have a chance in hell of ever understanding it; what with out measly 70-100 yrs lifespan and our very limited sensor array and processing capabilities.
That used to bum me out some. Then I found that because of this I can assign any meaning to life I care to or not, it is quite liberating. Right now my meaning is to see a lot of places and meet a lot of people, which is working out quite well. In a couple of years I'll dream up another meaning, we'll see.
In essence, don't get caught up too much in that whole career game (money's no good when you are dead), try to get along with other hairless monkeys (if for nothing else; you might need their goodwill later, but also because being nice feels good, you herd-animal!), and don't worry too much because really, on the long term and in the larger view, it means so little.
Life would be so much easier if everybody could get over their egos and accept that they are not the center of the goddamned universe. Sadly, it looks like that is not about to happen anytime soon.
Sorry to go off on a rant like that ;)

And now, for something completely different:
Lady Presenter: [briskly] Well, that's the End of the Film, now
here's the Meaning of Life.
[An envelope is handed to her. She opens it in a
business-like way.]
Thank you Brigitte. [She reads.]... Well, it's nothing
special. Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a
good book every now and then, get some walking in and try and
live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds
and nations. And finally, here are some completely gratuitous
pictures of penises to annoy the censors and to hopefully
spark some sort of controversy which it seems is the only way
these days to get the jaded video-sated public off their
fucking arses and back in the sodding cinema. Family
entertainment bollocks! What they want is filth, people doing
things to each other with chainsaws during tupperware parties,
babysitters being stabbed with knitting needles by gay
presidential candidates, vigilante groups strangling chickens,
armed bands of theatre critics exterminating mutant goats -
where's the fun in pictures? Oh well, there we are - here's
the theme music. Goodnight.

I have always thought you make your own meaning, that there is no divine plan or anything like that.
I do think your "random acts of kindness" are a good way to go, BTW. Make the world a little better if you can.

Yeah, I enjoy the idea that my destiny is my own and not some act of God.
It makes you more responsible for the things you do as well.
A good life, for yourself and others, is something of your own making.
I prefer that to God. And it gives me a sense of purpose and meaning.
God's kinda an easy option when you think about it.... :)

I've gotten many great responses, Thanks everyone for sharing. I guess I've evolved a lot from this post. I do think that life is random (why do some people get sick and others do not - aside form bad living habits like smoking, etc) but that we are in control with many things. I guess this is taking both sides of the question. How can it be random, yet us in control. Sometimes I think I believe in karma, then I go "Holy Shit!!!" WTF did I do? Was in in this lifetime (don't think so) or a past lifetime? I know people who are religious, I know people who are spiritual, I know others who don't seem to be either. I know it's a personal thing so I don't need to know what they are. I don't think there is a God who decides who will get cancer, or who will be beaten by their parents or whatever horrible thing life can throw at you. I think there may be some "Force" (this is for you Yoda) that may have a lot to do with the big picture.
Now back to our regularly scheduled nonsense.
PS - Glad you visited Gris

Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 Those who love money will never have enough. How absurd to think that wealth brings true happiness! The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what is the advantage of wealth—except perhaps to watch it run through your fingers! People who work hard sleep well, whether they eat little or much. But the rich are always worrying and seldom get a good night’s sleep.
Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat well, drink a good glass of wine, and enjoy their work—whatever they do under the sun—for however long God lets them live.
And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—that is indeed a gift from God. People who do this rarely look with sorrow on the past, for God has given them reasons for joy.
To me, the meaning of life is experiencing the journey. Those scriptures up above help me to put it into perspective.
It's the getting to point A. to point B.---to enjoy the ride there...not to live for the future, or live in the past...but to enjoy the present time. "Now".
Great post!

I belive in the saying HARM NONE. I think that when most people do wrong or hurt someone their conscience (God, yahweh, karma) will get them in the end....they will shrivel with bad fate, and feel ill.
Life only has meaning when you are happy and balanced... this can be hard to acheive. Happiness is fleeting at times but once we are there, it is close at hand and makes life easier to handle and SO WORTHWHILE. Happiness and harming none is a primary MEANING OF LIFE.
