South Street Seaport - NYC

We went to the South Street Seaport in NYC yesterday. It was great. It was a beautiful day to begin with. The boys haven't been there before for starters and it's been years since Dana and I went there. We had a tour of two masted ships that was interesting. We also went into the Museum that is there but it was so cold, we left. One thing that is playing down there is the Bodies exhibit where they have preserved bodies that reveal all of the muscles and circulatory systems and such. We will save it for another time. Griffin had a hat, sword and sheath made from ballons and we voluntered Dylan to be this street performers assistant. The guy was good. So as justice will prevail, the guy needed two other assistants so Dana and I went up there too. He needed people to had him objects while he rode a unicycle and juggled. When he first called me up, I was tempted to ask him if he had three balls so I could juggle (which I'm pretty good at) but I restrained myself. Now I wished I did ask because I think I could have gotten a laugh. I never realized I'm such an exhibitionist but I am (or have become one). There was another act there too. A ventriloquist. He had a sign that read"Working to pay rent" All I could think of was I hope he's in a rent controlled apartment. There's something about ventriloquists that seems very strange to me. I have no problem with people talking to themselves, especially in NYC.

After the shows were over, we walked over to Chinatown and took in the sites. You really get a feeling you're in China. Then we headed to Little Italy after seeing this place to eat. We found a great place that had incredible fresh brick over pizza. We had dinner on the sidewalk which is always cool because you can people watch. After dinner we walked over to Greenwich Village and looked at the building where Dana used to live. She was living there when I met her 20 years ago. It was a great place to hang out, I miss the city. I've gotten to really love it which is a switch because there was a time when I didn't. I couldn't live there unless I had a million dollars and even then, I would only have a place to flop now and then. It's not where I could live full time but it has so much to offer. So all in all, it was a great day. The boys, plus my nephew Ryan loved it. Another great memory I have with Dana and the boys. It's been a good summer so far. On a side note, Griffin and I went swimming this evening. The air temp was about 65 and breezy but the pool was 80 still. Tomorrow is supposed to be another great day.

  • Majorly cool place!
Very "New Yorkish". I agree..I'd like to live close enough to visit often, but not in the middle of it.
So you can juggle? Another hidden talent, Phil :-)
    Ventriloquists give me the creeps.
Remember that old movie with Anthony Hopkins? He thought his dummy was talking to him?
They've given me the heebie jeebies since then!
Iwent through Chinatown years ago, and you'd think you were suddenly transported to China. Amazing.
    What a great family day!
BTW, looks like Griffin could use another balloon or two ;-)

  • Thanks for the comments everyone. There was a good Tales from the Crypt on HBO years ago with Don Rickles and Bob Goldthwait. Very creepy, the puppet attached it's self to Goldthwaits hand. Yes, I can juggle. I taught myself about 25 yeras ago. I just can do the basic 3 ball thing and two in one hand. I never really tried bowling pins or chainsaws. I'll post it sometime.

Celeste, kids are great but it's not all fun and games all of the times. I left out all of the whining parts :-)

JLee, they start again after Labor Day. I thought I heard they started already by you

  • Have you eaten out at the Big Wang? :]
That juggler is a nutter! I can juggle, but only soft balls that definitely were not on fire.

  • your an awesome guitar player-i had no idea!
The song 'Tears in Heaven' brings back memories of when I was in the 7th gr. a classmate was killed while riding his bike and at the funeral his uncle played and sang(tried his best)this song- it will always remind me of that.
    Sorry for the depressing story

  • Nyc sounds like a wonderful place. It's a shame it's too expensive to actually live there, but at least your close enough to visit.
