Strong Leonid Meteor
Shower Expected This Weekend

The annual Leonid meteor shower could produce a strong outburst this weekend for residents of the North America and Western Europe.
A brief surge of activity is expected begin around 11:45 p.m. ET Saturday, Nov. 18. In Europe, that corresponds to early Sunday morning, Nov. 19 at 4:45 GMT. The outburst could last up to two hours.
At the peak, people in these favorable locations could see up to 150 shooting stars per hour, or more than two per minute.
"We expect an outburst of more than 100 Leonids per hour," said Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. Cooke notes that the shooting stars during this peak period are likely to be faint, however, created by very small meteoroid grains.
Elsewhere people will see the typically enjoyable Leonid display of a few meteors each hour, weather permitting and assuming dark skies away from city lights.

  • Celeste,
I just got back in from trying to see the meteors and only had seen 2 in about an hour. It's a little hazy here though. I went down to the lake with my neighbor and sat on the dock. My fingers are numb...

Lou Reed's sister, I know what you mean. thank God Saddam Hussein wasn't tried in L.A.

  • I'm getting up in teh early hours if the forecast is clear!
I try to see the Leonids every year, but only once have I actaully seen them and it was spectacular. A friend and I were in the middle of nowhere in Wales, to avoid light pollution, and it was comletely clear. So many massive shooting stars leaving huge trails across the sky - a very cool experience!
Litterally, it was that cold, it was impossible to get tent pegs into the frozen ground, they'd just bend, so we had to sleep in the car! :]

I love comets - especially when they are unexpected.. that makes it more magical.
I am offline for awhile (NO internet service, CUTTING ON BILLS) however, I take advantage of friends' computers or library... stay in touch :) NINA
