Texas governor orders
STD vaccine for all girls

The word that bothers me the most here is orders. It seems the person who should be most concerned about catching a STD is the Governor because he seems to be in bed with the drug company.

"By employing an executive order, Perry sidestepped opposition in the Legislature from conservatives and parents’ rights groups who fear such a requirement would condone premarital sex and interfere with the way Texans raise their children."

Ya think so, Governor DICK?

  • yeah, I've gotta explain to Cass why she has to get a shot next year, when she doesn't even know what sex is yet!!

  • What's funny is, we just ran this story again, and when the anchor said "Will an order from Governor Perry encourage Texas teens to have sex?" the director muttered "god, I hope so" hahahah

  • I take it he has sons, not daughters

  • I live in Texas. At first, I was upset about it, but after some thought, it's really no different from requiring the other vaccines.

You try to teach your kids to not have sex, but you know it's eventually going to happen. So, you try to teach them to use protection, and pray that they listen to you.

I wish they had a shot to prevent herpes, syphillis, and hiv.

  • I do think it is different than other vaccines. Small pox is contagious as are other diseases. So many of these vaccinations are new so they really don't know what side effects may occur later.
I guess it's just the fact that it is going to be the law and not a choice that bugs me plus that he is in bed with the drug companies. It's like the Cheney/Haliburton stuff (to me).

I know a lot of Texans it seems :-)

  • The papilloma virus is contagious, as well. Cervical cancer has been linked to this virus.

  • I have some other thoughts about this.

I would have opted for my daughter to get this vaccine, anyway, for her own protection. My family has enough money to pay for what would have been an optional treatment. Optional treatments are usually more expensive. Poorer families might not have been able to afford such a luxury.

By making this vaccine a requirement, Rick Perry has now made what would have possibly been an expensive treatment available to poorer families. Now, not just rich or upper middle class families can protect their daughters.

Welcome to the world of socialized medicine.

  • OK, I seem to be uninformed (not unusual). I still don't like being told that someone HAS to take something like this. I know, I don't live in Texas and I don't have a daughter.

This is what I get for posting too early in the morning before my coffee....
I stand corrected (or sit as the case may be)

  • I do think it's a great service for those that can't afford it and want it. But doesn't it bother you that you will have no choice?
    What will be next?

  • The days the federal government passed the sherman anti-trust act and forced americans to start paying income taxes were the days when we stopped having choices.

...Or when it drafted our sons into the army.

...Or told us we couldn't smoke pot, or hire hookers.

...or when they put up traffic signals telling us when we could stop or when we could go.

...or speed limits telling us how slow or fast we could go.

...or racial quotas in university admissions, or hiring policies.

...or that we can't carry hand guns.

    the list goes on forever.

What makes you think you've ever had a choice in anything?

  • Sorry, Phil.

I seem to have reached the troll stage in my last comment to you. This is your blog, your space to rant...I should have just shut up.

  • The blog is :This Space for Rant:
    not :My Space for Rant:

Well, Dana won't let me hire a hooker either so I'm not too upset about that. What was that song in the 70s? "Signs, signs everywhere there's signs..."

The Libertarian Party had a saying
"The more that's illegal, the ill-er the Eagle" or something like that.

    There is too much government

  • Marriage is at best a benevolent dictatorship.

If I were to run for president, my motto would be "A hit in every bong, and a hooker in every bed."

  • You've got that right..

    and my vote :-)

  • I guess I'm really weird, but the part I have the most trouble with in the entire nationwide papilloma virus story is the part in which parents object on the "religious" grounds that they might have to explain what their daughter's genitalia will eventually be used for. Isn't this a small price to pay in order to possibly save that same girls life from cervical cancer down the road? "Yes, honey, there was a vaccine available back then that could have saved your life, but I was too afraid we might have to talk about your hoohah"... Oh what's the big deal? It's not the PARENT'S life, they just get to make the decision.

Now as far as Perry goes, I live in Texas, and I wish I had two of him. And I'd use the second one to cover it up.

  • I guess I'm the only non-Texan here but it bothers me that they MUST get the vaccine. Why don't they just MAKE everyone wear chastity belts.
    Problem solved

  • Hey Phil- I'm coming in a bit late here- but I'm yet ANOTHER Texan you 'know' but I don't agree with Gov. Perry on this one!!! I don't think it should be made into a law. And I think it's a vaccine being pushed out there to the public too soon, without enough testing and I also think Perry is "in bed with the drug company". That to me- is just wrong.

And I don't think anyone can say vaccinating against HPV is just like vaccinating against the other diseases like mumps, polio, rubella, etc... because you can't catch HPV from just being around others. If you don't have sex, you don't catch HPV. It's just not the same.

I totally understand the standpoint of protecting your children but THIS case just shouldn't be made into a law. And if he was going to push to make it into a law, he should've gone through the usual channels to do so. Let the people VOTE! I don't agree with his methods of pushing this one through using an executive order.

  • Thank you TuxBaby.
He should go through the proper channels.
